- Discontinued when children remain seizure free for at least 2 years
- In benign epilepsy syndromes can be stopped after a period as short as 6 months
- Most relapses occur in the first 6 months
- Most important risk factor for relapse following discontinuation is abnormal EEG before stopping drug
- Therapy should be discontinued slowly over a period of 3 to 6 months
- Most children who have not had a seizure for 2 yr or longer and who have a normal EEG when AED withdrawal is initiated remain free of seizures after discontinuing medication
